After reading @noisycats‘ post on the advisability of covering REM, I realized I couldn’t think of any notable REM covers*. Thinking I was missing something obvious, I googled around, and kept landing on songs REM covered rather than bands who covered REM. I did find this list from Paste Magazine of the 20 best REM covers, which also admits that there aren’t tons of REM covers, so maybe @noisycats is onto something. Anyway, I looked the above one up (which took some effort- they didn’t even link to it!) because it intrigued me, but I’m not sure what to think. For one thing it’s too long. And I’m not sure they quite get it right. But you can see what you think.

* the 2 REM covers which come to mind for me immediately are the Feelies covering Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars) and Shaking Through. They do a great job with both, but I’ll never forget first hearing them do Boxcars at Maxwells. Here was one of my favorite bands covering what, if pressed, I’d probably say is my favorite REM song. A beautiful moment, so that would definitely be my top REM cover.

I don’t know if it’s “notable” really, but I do like Motion City Soundtrack’s cover of “Pop Song 89,” which is basically just the R.E.M. version but louder and harder, which works for me.
